The clock makers and cabinet makers of Menim Restorations have today recreated the beauty of England's horological past, still using all the age-old skills and only traditional materials. Our clock cases are constructed from solid English oak with hand laid top quality veneers (walnut, or flame mahogany, depending upon design), then hand polished, a process alone that takes 4 days.
The movement of the clock is either a period piece at least 100 years old and fully overhauled in our workshop, or one of our own, hand made exactly as it would have been in the 18th and 19th centuries. Our clock maker has a wealth of experience as his family have been involved in the making and restoring of clocks since 1830.
The dials are made from thick brass sheet with hand engraved chapter and seconds rings. Often a makers name is found on the old movement and this is then also engraved on the dial. The matted centre and corner spandrels are gilded and the rings are silvered by hand. The hands are fretted, chased out and heat blued.
Every clock built by Menim Restorations is made to order, therefore, because of varying grain patterns in the wood and polishing techniques, every clock is totally unique.
